![]() ![]() Ultimately, it's up to the business whether or not they want to offer regional pricing, but the reality is the people who make it have to make a living where they live, not where someone else does. A small company is unlikely to be able to exploit its users in the same way (nor would they want to, hopefully). ![]() They profit from gathering knowledge about its users and discovering trends in markets, including those in developing countries. Google can afford to offer Youtube Premium in emerging markets for a reduced rate because not only are they huge, but they can also derive a lot of information from its users and extract profit in other ways. If you offer regional pricing, you might extract a couple more dollars out of your app but you'll likely end up spending more time/money on supporting the customers, of who are of extremely low value to you. Even at $16 USD you can very easily lose a lot of time from any sort of support inquiries. Implicitly, one would also have to offer after-purchase support to their customers. Their income is based on how many copies of the app they write sells for and for how much. It could be an oversight or they might give you a discount code.Įdit: Some people probably don't like the idea of not having regional pricing, but it makes very little economic sense for small businesses to offer it. Still, maybe try emailing the bartender folks about it. It can be worthwhile for large corporations that benefit from increasing their user base but I don’t see why any indie developer would find it worthwhile to charge less for their app when they can only ever extract value the one time. Regional pricing is just a subsidization by richer countries. The value of something doesn’t change just because you live in a different country. Right now, I just look for free or FOSS apps. I guess they just assume that I am a cheapskate trying to save some money. I have emailed devs in the past to get a more fair regional pricing in the past. My advice? If you really can't afford it, email the author, say you can't afford it and explain why and maybe you'll get it free or for a discount. Either way, Steam is the only platform where I have seen prices that made me say "Hey, that's a fair price." I do not how much of that is just Steam or whether the developers themselves do it. I have managed to get great games at good prices in my local currency. Steam actually has a good regional pricing system. But ultimately, they are just pricing out customers like myself who cannot afford the current prices due to the economy in which they live in. The Bartender dev is free to charge whatever they want to charge. ![]() In other words, there is no additional cost incurred for each person who installs the app, apart from maybe in rare cases where support is involved. I don't think Bartender requires an AWS infrastructure or even a running server to make individual installations work. Apart from that, I can think of only support costs. If the app required an active cloud infrastructure, then that would involve running costs. I would never ask any dev to sell their software at a loss. I am not sure if I fall under the Bitcoin millionaire category. So, it would have been even more ridiculous if I had bought it. Can't believe I am getting judged for not buying an app that doesn't have a proper regional pricing for my country.Įven if I did buy the MacBook, I would have had to pay a much larger figure than the official prices in the US store, because of the import taxes in my country. So, 20 USD for you is not same as 20 USD for me. The disposable income (when converted to USD) after cost of living is multiple magnitudes lower than what (I assume) most of you are getting in your countries. The income here is extremely low when converted to USD. Is it not enough to mention that it's too expensive for me? Do I need to add an explanation as well? I am not from the US, or any of the other developed nations. I got it via work.įrankly speaking, I don't understand why people focus on the bartender price so much, and just feel compelled to say that I should buy the product. As mentioned in my reply to that said comment.
